Belton history and Careage home care
Belton was first settled 1850 and named Nolanville, taking the name of nearby Nolan
Springs which were named for Texan explorer Philip Nolan. In 1851, it changed its name
to Belton after being named the county seat of newly created Bell County named after
Texas’ governor, Peter Hansborough Bell.
Located just below Belton Dam on FM 2271 near historic Tennessee Valley and along
the Leon River, the Miller Springs area has played a significant role in the lives of
Central Texas inhabitants. Native Americans used the narrow river valley with its
overhanging limestone ledges for shelter, transportation, and hunting and gathering
activities. The scenic waterway and abundant flora and fauna also provided a favorite
recreational location for later Central Texas families. The rock shelter is now part of
Miller Springs Nature Center.
In August 1850, the new pioneer town of Belton (first named Nolandville that was
changed to Belton in 1851) was laid out in blocks, streets, and lots with the courthouse
public square the center. It was designated County seat for the newly organized Bell
County. Incorporated in 1852, it was the only town in the County and was the last place
of civilization seen by the pioneers heading West by horseback or wagon train.
